Driving Basics: Driving Rules
Trainees are unable to drive unless approved by management.
Driving Rules
Never operate a sweeper if you do not think it is SAFE
Be a Defensive Driver
OBEY all Traffic Signs and Speed Limits
Use the 2 second following rule ( In wet conditions use the 4 second folling rule)
Make WIDE right turns to not damage the right side of the sweeper head.
Reverse driving is only used in emergencies. Never reverse with the sweeper head in the downposition. Only reverse driving allowed is while dumping.
Remember, safety is Job #1. Always wear your protective gear. Never stick your head out thewindow. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
Whenever possible, only turn toward the driver’s side of the vehicle. Keep your turns slow to keepyour sweeper in good shape.

Driving Basics: Turns
Turns
1: ONLY TURN TO THE DRIVER’S SIDE OF THE SWEEPER WHENEVER POSSIBLE!This is important! Accidents happen when you turn to the side of the sweeper away from the driver’sside. You have less of a blind spot between the window and the ground on your side than on the otherside of the sweeper. By following this rule, you’re less likely to hit a curb
2: KEEP ALL OBSTACLES ON THE DRIVER’S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. You have lessvisibility, which makes it harder to judge your distance from obstacles. Hitting one could damageyour sweeper, your customer’s property, or both. None of those possibilities will reflect well uponyou. Look at the Lot and see if there are any new obstacles in your way that the map does not showthat you will have to account for.
3: Do not turn when the head is on speed bumps or approaches. When sweeping over a speedbump always continue straight until the rear tires clear. This not only will prevent damage to the head, but avoids the sweeper frame enduring unnecessary twisting. The same goes for driveway approachesand other uneven areas.

Driving Basics: Speed
Speed
Slow is fast, and fast is slow.
Always yield to pedestrains and cars.
When you’re driving straight in an open lot, the ideal speed is around 5 to 7 mph.
When you’re turning or using your gutter broom, you should be going about 3 to 5 mph.
Remember, high-speed sweeping can leave litter behind right where you just swept.
Do not drive the sweeper into holes or uneven surfaces. Straddle holes.
